Brand Case Study #4
iPhone 8 is set to launch with Apple's annual event in September which is still months away and we already have some solid information about what we can expect. So here goes.
0. The 2017 iPhone models
Apple is rumored to be planning on debuting three devices, one premium model with an OLED display and two standard models that use traditional LCD panels. While there is confusion over the size of the OLED panel, the LCD iPhones are expected to be 4.7 and 5.5 inches. Thus, two models based on the traditional TFT-LCD screens and the special one in the 5.15" OLED avatar.
1. Radical Redesign
iPhone 8 is set to be an edge to edge design with a screen area of 5.8 inch with 5.15 inches of usable display area, Guess what? The rest of the area will be dedicated for virtual buttons. Which means that the home button will be built into the touch display.
The display is also said to be a flexible OLED rather than the conventional LCD.
2. Form Factor
Returning to the original iPhone 4, the iPhone 8 is set to ditch the aluminium finish for an all glass form factor. However, like the 4, it will be held together by an aluminium frame.
3. Battery
To make space for some extra battery life, the iPhone 8 will move to an L-shape battery form. To allow for a far better battery life, Apple is also moving to stacked logic board. The presence of an OLED display is also bound to improve the battery life due to its low power requirements.
4. Cameras
The iPhone 8 cameras will have optical image stabilization for wide-angle and tele-photo lenses. It could also support 3D photography effect like the ones found in the LG camera module. The cameras are also rumored to be aligned vertically (this could be just to save the space for putting in two lenses)
The front facing camera will have 3 modules that enables 3D sensing powered by PrimeSense technology. Finding the location and depth of the objects placed in front of it will become easier and faster this way.
5. Wireless Charging
8. Price
The new iPhone will break the $1000 barrier without any doubt.

5. Wireless Charging
What was rumored to be long-range wireless charging will now be restricted to inductive charging like the ones already present in Apple Watch. The hinted use of glass body in the new iPhone also suggests that inductive charging will make way into the iPhone 8. The downside here is that wireless charging technology will be made available through a separate accessory that has to be purchased separately too.
6. Speed and processing capabilities
As far as the performance goes, iPhone 8 is expected to be more powerful and energy efficient than the iPhone 7. TSMC has secured all the orders for the Apple A11 chip and the RAM is expected to be 3 GB as in the iPhone 7.
7. iOS 11
iOS 11 is set to be announced soon in Apple event and it is expected to bring in a lot of user friendly gestures and functionality. iOS 11 is expected to improve Apples 3D touch through out the body of the new iPhone 8 thus removing the physical home button. iOS 11 will enable Virtual Reality with the help of the front facing cameras thus making it capable to detect faces and figures for games and other software. The much requested Dark Mode will also make its way into the iOS 11.
