From Hatchback's to Sedan's to UV's to EV's - new car launches of 2018

Indian automobile industry has seen a paradigm shift in the previous years with a slew of segment changing and niche creating vehicles being launched. The year 2018 is expected to be no different with car makers gearing up for more disruptions.

Lets have a look at the potential list of upcoming cars which has been compiled from reliable sources in the automobile fraternity.

1. 2018 Maruti Suzuki Alto/ All new Renault Kwid Rival

Maruti Suzuki is planning to freshen up its volume spinner the Alto with all new design and internals. But at present there is confusion whether to retain the existing Alto and pit the new model in a Renault Kwid like form factor with SUV-inspired design cues. In any case, the powertrain is expected to be a 1.0 Litre unit with both Manual and Automatic boxes.

2. Hyundai Santro (AH2)

The model that launched Hyundai in the Indian automobile industry is set for a comeback and is expected to replace the i10. It will compete against the Celerio, Tiago and Kwid. Rumors floating around suggests that the cars internals have already entered production stage.

3. Maruti Suzuki WagonR

The latest version of WagonR is expected to be longer and squatter than the previous generations and would be based on the Stingray minicars launched in Japan recently.

4. Maruti Suzuki Swift

The new Swift is already on the way for the Indian markets with the TVC shoot rumored to have commenced in Lonavla areas. The car is expected to be bigger and lighter than the outgoing model and is also expected to come in the SPORT version soon after the official launch.

5.Mahindra S201 (4M and 4M plus models)

Two models are expected to be launched by Mahindra in the SsangYong (Korean car company under the ownership of Mahindra) Tivoli platform. The models are expected to carry the 125BHP / 305Nm torque units and would compete with Creta, WRV, Duster, Captur etc.

6. Tata Q50x twin SUV's

With inputs from JLR, Tata is developing two SUV's code named the Q50x (Q501 and Q502). Presently the SUV's are out doing its testing rounds but in JLR Discovery body shell. It will be interesting to see whether Tara actually uses the Discovery body shells for the new SUV's. Q501 will be a 5 seater and the Q502 is expected to the LWB model with 7 seat option.

7. Jeep Renegade

FCA overwhelmed with the success of Compass model will surely rope in the Renegade to carry on the momentum in 2018. The Renegade is expected to fight it out with Creta, Duster and the likes and would certainly comes with 4x4 options in both manual and automatic variants.

8. Nissan Kicks (pure speculation)

Nissan India is expected to take a fresh bite into the compact UV segment in India with the Kicks model. The launch of Renault Captur will certainly be a motivation for Nissan now. The model will not be a re-badging exercise though. More information about the model for India is not available at the moment.

9. Mahindra U321 MPV

Space like Innova, Reliability like Innova and Price more or less like the Ertiga. This is what is being rumored about Mahindra's new MPV. Now Innova getting a rival in a very different price point will be a battle worth watching out for.

10. Toyota Vios

The baby Corolla is on the cards with the new Vios. Toyota is slowly trying in to come back to the mid-sedan market with the much anticipated Vios. The powertrain details are not available at the moment but it is expected to carry the Etios/ Corolla versions to get a competitive pricing point.

11. 2018 Maruti Ertiga LWB

I call this the LWB because the new Ertiga is expected to be a full size bigger than the existing version. Lets hope that the internals also get a bump up in terms of power and torque with this new avatar of the Ertiga.

12. Skoda Karoq

Skoda is on a roll in India and they should be. With a revamp in its dealership and service network pan India, Skoda is once again making inroads into the premium sedan and SUV market in the country. The new gen Octavia, Superb and the Kodiak has been well received and this has enthused Skoda to look at the Karok to take the fight to the likes of Compass, Creta and others.

13. 2018 Suzuki Jimny

All you Gypsy fans out there, you have a reason to celebrate in 2018. The Suzuki Jimny is being considered for India and it seems as if production is well on its way (may be for international markets at present but the question still persists). With auto makers trying to create niches for itself, it will be interesting to see whether Maruti is interested in reviving its very own old time niches which has been eaten into by the likes of the Mahindra Thar in recent times.

14. Nissan Sunny

The already long Nissan Sunny is expected to get even longer in 2018. The model will have sharper lines and a more contemporary design all around.

15. 2nd Gen Honda Amaze

The Amaze has been a consistent volume spinner for Honda in the sub-4m sedan segment in the past couple of years. With the new Dzire being launched, all eyes are on Honda now to give a refresh to the Amaze. The new model is expected to borrow heavily from the elder sibling the City and will look like a baby City too.

16. Ssangyong Rexton 2018

The 2018 Rexton has been green lit for production in India and will wear the Mahindra badge. It will be placed in the SUV segment dominated by the Fortuner and the Endeavor. Pricing would be the best bet that Rexton can use for making any sort of inroads in this segment.

17. Honda CRV 2018

The New Honda CRV will come as a 7-seater model with a diesel engine. The earth dreams engine from Honda could produce well over 150 BHP for the new CRV with equally matching torque figures.

18. Mitsubishi Outlander

To be sold as a CBU, the new Outlander has already been teased in the previous months but, would attract a hefty price tag.

19. Audi Q2/ BMW X2 / Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40

Yes, all of the above are set for launch in Indian in 2018. It talks a lot about the premium car makers' vision for India and as to how it will cater to its ever growing Millennial population.

20. The usual suspects aka Facelifts

Facelifts are expected for the Elite i20, Creta, Ciaz, Camry, Q5 and XUV 500. Nexon, KUV 100, Datsun Redi-Go are expected to be launched in AMT models. Figo Crossover and Datsun Cross are ready to roll in mid-2018. KUV 100 and Nano are also going to see all Electric versions too.

So all the Petrol/ Diesel and Electric - heads out there have a festive AUTO - 2018 to look out for with my personal pics being the Swift Sport (original), Jeep Renegade, Mahindra MPV and the Suzuki Jimny.

Happy motoring folks, have a rocking 2018!
